Weekly Update

 Happy New Year!

art by Tricia Robinson

I was overjoyed to see the girls on Monday! I had been so disappointed to have to take sick days on our first days back after break, because I missed the girls over break. We are all caught up now, and we had a very productive week. In math, we have multiplied and divided like crazy. The girls should be feeling confident with 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication and long division now. Maybe practice a little together at home, as I will assess this week. Then, we will move to fractions. We are reading a great story about some young writers in New York during The Harlem Renaissance. The girls are enjoying it, and seem to be flying through the story! We spent a good deal of time working on our latest writing project. Each of the girls interviewed a student from Mrs. Hiscock's room, so the writing started with interview questions. Now we are writing "magazine articles" about our partners. Each student is required to include some nice compound sentences. We will wrap up the project by creating a magazine cover of our partners. We cannot wait to see the final results.

I am looking forward to the next two months with the girls. January and February can be wonderful periods of growth for students this age. It will be important for the girls to work hard and focus on putting forth their best effort to make the most of this period of growth. Keep the line of communication open with your daughter...make sure she knows your expectations of her at school, for homework, for demonstrating intellectual curiosity etc... At family dinners discuss what she is learning at school. The blog is a wonderful place to start - a springboard for questions. In addition, be sure to check See Saw and read what the girls' specials teachers are doing in their classes, as well.

This week the girls will switch over to Chinese classes.

Friday, January 26 will be a Gold/White Spirit Day.
The girls are invited to dress up in their team color.

The girls seem very excited - we have announced that February 2 will be our second Wordly Wise Dress Up Day. I cannot wait to see the girls' creative costumes this time!
