Weekly Update

We have had a fun and productive week! Fractions have been a huge focus this week, and I absolutely LOVE those aha moments that keep coming. See below for some fun photos from math lessons this week. You can support your daughter's learning in math by making sure her knowledge of the x facts stays sharp. It is pertinent in all we do in math at this stage. In addition, the girls need to continue to practice 2-digit multiplication and long division. We will practice this at school, but doing one or two problems at home each night will ensure your daughter doesn't forget these important algorithms while we focus on fractions for the next month. In reading, we have begun the book, Number the Stars. The story takes place in Copenhagen during WWII. It is a favorite of mine, and one that I hear some parents remember reading! There is a lot of background information and vocabulary to review to make sure the girls understand the time period. Next week we will really dig into the story of these two special friends, Annemarie and Ellen.

Look for a folder of work to come home on Monday or Tuesday.

Thank you to those who have brought in hooded towels for our Little Hands Service Project!
We will collect towels through Wednesday.
Details are HERE.

Thank you to Master Hubbley, Phoebe's Taekwondo instructor, for treating us to an informative lesson on Taekwondo and self defense. Fun was had by all! More photos below.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and we will have a class celebration on Wednesday, February 14. The girls may start working on a mailbox (about shoebox size) to hold cards from their classmates. They can be as creative with this as they would like, and it would be great to have the boxes and Valentines in by Monday, February 12
They need to make a card for each student in our class, and here is a class list:

Weekly Update

During our short week we celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. The girls read a variety of articles about MLK and responded to comprehension questions. They were able to connect these themes with those in our book, Song of Harlem, which we finished this week. We also finished Unit 3 in Math, but the girls have not seen the last of multiplying and dividing - we will practice these algorithms all year. We start fractions on Mondays - lots of food talk (:  pies and pizza are made for fractions! On Monday, we will exchange magazine covers and articles with our partners in Mrs. Hiscock's room, and we will celebrate today's National Popcorn Day a little late.

The girls seemed to adore getting a little bit of snow, and we are all holding out hope for more than a dusting in the near future. Also, coming up is our next Service Project. The Second Graders and Junior Kindergarteners are "sponsoring" the project which will benefit Little Hands of Virginia. This organization provides essentials to families with babies. Fourth grade will collect hooded baby blankets. All details are  HERE.

Weekly Update

 Happy New Year!

art by Tricia Robinson

I was overjoyed to see the girls on Monday! I had been so disappointed to have to take sick days on our first days back after break, because I missed the girls over break. We are all caught up now, and we had a very productive week. In math, we have multiplied and divided like crazy. The girls should be feeling confident with 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication and long division now. Maybe practice a little together at home, as I will assess this week. Then, we will move to fractions. We are reading a great story about some young writers in New York during The Harlem Renaissance. The girls are enjoying it, and seem to be flying through the story! We spent a good deal of time working on our latest writing project. Each of the girls interviewed a student from Mrs. Hiscock's room, so the writing started with interview questions. Now we are writing "magazine articles" about our partners. Each student is required to include some nice compound sentences. We will wrap up the project by creating a magazine cover of our partners. We cannot wait to see the final results.

I am looking forward to the next two months with the girls. January and February can be wonderful periods of growth for students this age. It will be important for the girls to work hard and focus on putting forth their best effort to make the most of this period of growth. Keep the line of communication open with your daughter...make sure she knows your expectations of her at school, for homework, for demonstrating intellectual curiosity etc... At family dinners discuss what she is learning at school. The blog is a wonderful place to start - a springboard for questions. In addition, be sure to check See Saw and read what the girls' specials teachers are doing in their classes, as well.

This week the girls will switch over to Chinese classes.

Friday, January 26 will be a Gold/White Spirit Day.
The girls are invited to dress up in their team color.

The girls seem very excited - we have announced that February 2 will be our second Wordly Wise Dress Up Day. I cannot wait to see the girls' creative costumes this time!
