We have had a great week, but it is clear that everyone is looking forward to Thanksgiving. We have continued to enjoy writing in our gratitude journals, and I count these precious girls at the top of my blessings!

We are also looking forward to a nice visit from the St. Christopher's boys on Tuesday for a Math Expo full of math activities and games followed by some time to play on the playground together.

If you live near some pine trees, we are in need of (a lot!) of pine cones. We would be so grateful if anyone could bring in a bag with 10-20 pine cones. We need about 80 more pine cones. Big thanks to those who have already collected some for us.

We are every excited to wrap up our study of the three branches of government with a trip to the State Capitol.

Weekly Update

What an astounding Wordly Wise Dress Up Day!

We all had a blast with a mammoth vocabulary explosion in our room today. The girls were clever and creative with their costumes, and we were all entertained by this fun day. More photos below.

The hardships of the Oregon Trail are coming to life as we continue the wagon train journey alongside Sam, his family, and Ranger the rescue dog. Ask your daughter what she thinks of life on the Trail. In math, the girls are adding and subtracting with nice accuracy. We will assess next week and move on to multiplication and division. We are also working on word problems.

See if your daughter can beat you at this question....

8    5    3    9    6    2

Using each digit only once, create two 3-digit numbers with the smallest possible difference.

This week I gave each of the girls a little Gratitude Journal. We are writing about three things we feel grateful for each day. Did you know that focusing on our gratitude can actually make us happier people? Read more here if you are interested. We will continue writing in these journals throughout Advent to remain focused on joy and gratitude during these busy seasons.

We are participating in a school-wide
Canned Food Drive
to benefit the St. Stephen's Food Pantry.
All donations will also be counted toward a Gold/White competition.

We had a busy and fun week with Halloween on Tuesday! The girls managed to work hard and accomplish a lot despite the distractions of costumes and excitement. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Tarabay for the fun activity. She also brought her ability to calmly repeat the same directions for 4 different classes and an enthusiastic attitude.

We had a happy Halloween Party.

Please remember that Monday is a teacher workday, so the girls get a holiday. I will look forward to seeing them on Tuesday, November 7.

This week we finished up our rounding unit and all activities with the three branches of government. Look for a folder of work midweek with some nice assessments. In math, we have moved on to adding and subtracting large numbers. The girls have a great deal of confidence with this skill, so this might be a quick unit. In reading and history, we talked about the 13 colonies and the original states and how the country began to expand. The girls did some research on the westward expansion, and they are learning so much new information! They seem especially fascinated with the American Bison, and they really love where the '49ers got their name. Now we have begun to read Ranger in Time, Rescue on the Oregon Trail. It is a story of a rescue dog who travels back in time to walk the Oregon Trail with Sam and his family. The girls are enjoying it, and we have all been awed by the amount of food each covered wagon carried per person - be sure to ask your daughter how much.

Remember, Wordly Wise Dress Up Day is Friday, November 10

This is always a Fourth Grade Favorite. I look forward to seeing the girls' creativity!

The girls' biking unit continues for the next two weeks, so please be sure your daughter has her helmet at school.
