Weekly Update

We have had a great week wrapping up our James and the Giant Peach activities. In addition, we have learned a lot about the author, Roald Dahl. He is creative and fun, and now many of our girls are reading other books by him! We will keep a list to see how many of his great titles we can cover as a class....Matilda? The BFG...Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? There are many, many more!

CLICK HERE to read a list of 10 of his best books .... according to a library in Colorado.

CLICK HERE to read a list of books similar in creativity and fun factor...according to What We Do All Day Blog.

Please know that I have not read every single book listed....yet ☺☺

In History, our focus has been on demonstrating an understanding of the three branches of government. The girls have made their own flip charts and comics using Pixton. Big numbers cannot scare this group! They have been rounding huge numbers to the closest 10, 100, 1,000, 10, 000 and even 100,000! It's tricky, but they are making nice progress. Ask your daughter to demonstrate at home.
And here is a problem for the parents:
What is the largest number that can be rounded to 230,000 when rounding to the closest 10, 000?

The girls' biking unit will begin next week in P.E.
Please send a bike helmet to school
with your daughter on Monday.
For safety reasons, the girls will begin the unit in small groups. If your daughter is an avid bike rider at home and doesn't want to part with her helmet for 3 weeks, CLICK HERE for a schedule of exactly what PE days (we have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays) your daughter will need that helmet.

The girls are very excited that our very first Wordly Wise Dress Up Day is on the calendar - November 10.
This is a Fourth Grade Favorite!

Weekly Update

Can you find your daughter?
The girls loved making their Avatars on the Pixton site this week. Next week we will begin to use this site to create comics that demonstrate understanding of the Three Branches of Government. In Math, we finished up our Geometry Unit. Look for the girls' assessments to come home on Tuesday. We have already begun reading and writing numbers into the millions, and we will begin rounding large numbers this week. James and the Giant Peach is -literally- getting juicy, and the girls are loving it! They don't want to stop reading.

Reminder ~ Parent Teacher Conferences are Friday, October 20
I look forward to meeting with each of you in the coming week.

Weekly Update

We have had a productive week!

Friday was especially fun with Gold~White Spirit Day and the Blessing of the Animals.

The adventures of James and the Giant Peach continue to delight the girls. We are working on writing thorough responses to comprehension questions, as well as reading with expression and fluency. We are enjoying Roald Dahl's wonderful, descriptive language, and we continue to work on developing strong vocabularies. In Math, we are finished with our first geometry unit. We will assess this week and move on to big numbers and rounding.

In spelling, we focused on three syllable patterns and how to add -ing to words with these patterns. As you are reading with your daughter, notice the -ing words and talk with her about what she has learned. Our goal is not to just spell those ten words correctly, it is to apply these spelling rules consistently in our writing.
